Former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf joined Michael D. Tubbs, founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, for a roundtable discussion about Oakland Resilient Families, the guaranteed income pilot which began in 2021 and concluded in June 2023. A recipient of the program, Alisha Roe, also participated in the discussion.
“The wealthiest nation should not tolerate that our babies are growing up in poverty,” said Libby Schaaf. “Guaranteed income is the most transformative policy we can make. This is not radical. We’re doing it right now. The child tax credit. Covid relief.”
“Nobody wakes up one day and says I want to be low income,” said Alisha Roe, a recipient of Oakland Resilient Families guaranteed income. “I am living proof, the people in the film are living proof. If you give us the opportunity, we will rise to the occasion… to be what you didn’t think we could be.”
